Blind Spots

"As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die, and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.” Nathan said to David, “You are the man!"  2 Samuel 12:5-7

David was a man after God’s own heart. He knew God’s character, understood His law, and worshipped Him passionately. Yet he was still open to self-deception. When Nathan confronted David, using a story about a man who had his beloved lamb taken away, King David was outraged at the injustice. David understood right and wrong, but he somehow failed to see that he had done the same thing.

There are three reminders for me in this passage:

  • Stay vigiliant. Just knowing what is right and righteous isn’t enough (though it is an important step). I must regularly examine my heart and actions.
  • I need the Spirit’s help to show me where I fall short. I am too easily self-deceived.
  • I need community. God brought Nathan to show David what he wasn’t willing to see himself. I need those close to me to confront me when I’ve chosen the wrong way.

It’s so easy to deceive myself - ignoring or justifying sin. David is also a great example of repentance and I pray that I when confronted with a needed truth, I would also be quick to repent.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way. Psalm 139:23-24
