And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” 2 Kings 6:17
Elisha’s servant was concerned and anxious about their situation, after all they were surrounded by an enemy army, yet the prophet remained calm. When the servant cried out “what shall we do?” Elisha didn't answer his question but prayed that his assistant’s eyes would be opened. As far as we know the servant had excellent sight, but he was spiritually blind to what God was doing around him.
Pekah, the word translated as open, is used in reference to both eyes and ears. But it is not used in a physical sense. It has to do with seeing intellectual or spiritual truth. God answered Elisha and this servant saw with his eyes the army of God, and his heart and mind were opened to the truth.
When a situation seems large and I’m tempted to spin and cry “what shall I do?”, it is because I’ve taken my eyes off God and His work around me. Yet I can remain calm when my eyes are on Him. The Lord has never shown me chariots or horses or fire, but I know He has the power to call them on my behalf at any time. He is at work, even when my physical eyes don’t notice. I am beginning to see His Hand more and more and I marvel at His care. I want eyes to constantly be aware of God’s work around me. Spiritual sight is always a gift of the Spirit but He calls me to participate by exercising a muscle as I practice watching for His hand and listening for His voice.
Lord, give me eyes to see and ears to hear.
Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which He has called you, what are the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints. Ephesians 1:18
