To Know

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe. Ephesians 1:18-19

As believers, there are certain things that God wants us to know are true. They don’t become true when we realize them, they’ve been true all along. But the power of understanding these truths can affect how we live our life.

The Spirit gives us eyes to see. Paul doesn’t pray that his church receive what God has for them but that they would see and know that which is already theirs.

The HOPE to which we are called. Because of Christ’s work we live in hope. Yes, it is the hope of our future glorification and reunion with Him. But it is also hope in the now. The hope in Him that He provides for us, He renders justice, He grants mercy.

The RICHES of our inheritance as saints. Included in that hope is all that we receive as His children. We are heirs to His glory, even as we suffer with Him.[1] We receive a life eternal where every tear is dried and we will reside with Him. He is the Treasure, the Riches of our inheritance.

The POWER issued toward us who believe. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead will also raise those who believe. The immeasurable greatness of His Might is wielded on our behalf for the purpose of fulfilling His call in us and His will on earth.

Paul prays for his fellow believers in Ephesus that they would comprehend the standing and resources that are theirs. I want to embrace that truth too. As we step into a new year – how can we approach life differently as the eyes of our hearts are opened to what is ours in Him?

I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which He has called you, what are the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His great might  that He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places. Ephesians 1:16-20
