Progress?

There is a worldview that says man is progressing – not just technologically, but evolving into a better person. The argument is, that if we just get the obstacles out of the way, we can eliminate all kinds of evil. But I see little difference between the news pages of today and turning the Bible pages documenting history past.

The ancient Canaanites had a god named Molech. He was a gruesome god that received child sacrifices. His idol was beast-like with outstretched arms. The baby was placed on the arms where it would roll downward into a cavernous opening of a furnace, sometimes fashioned as a mouth or belly. Children were sacrificed to keep Molech happy, and he then supplied prosperity for the future.

God forbade the Israelites from engaging in this evil when they enter into their land. I'm a little shocked that God had to tell them not to burn their kids.

It’s so easy to be horrified at the evil of child sacrifice, but are we really any different? Are we willing to sacrifice our children for economic prosperity? What about to protect our environment or gain social status? What are our gods today? A recent report revealed that two British hospitals were burning babies for fuel. I need to pause here a minute just so that can sink in. They were using the bodies of aborted or miscarried children in their incinerators that were actually energy generators.

We really haven’t “advanced” at all. We’ve disguised our evil somewhat, but the heart of man is in need of a savior as much as ever.

Bless God for His redeeming work, which is available to us all.

They built the high places of Baal in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to offer up their sons and daughters to Molech, though I did not command them, nor did it enter into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.  Jeremiah 32:35
