There are many words for singing and also for praise. Zamar combines them both and refers specifically to singing that praises God. Zamar can also be translated as plucking so is associated with music on stringed instruments.
David plucked his harp (zamar) and it soothed Saul.
Whenever the evil spirit from God bothered Saul, David would play his harp. Saul would relax and feel better, and the evil spirit would go away. 1 Samuel 16:23
Was it also the presence of David’s praise that shooed away the darkness for Saul, and not merely the plucking of the harp?
Music moves our moods. It moved Saul’s. It can buoy my emotions with strains that are exciting, calming, or have a rallying effect. Sometimes a mood dictates the songs I listen to or sing. But I want to be intentional. I can also use music to instruct my heart where it needs to go. I hope zamar pours from my heart. But even when it doesn’t, I can bring zamar and let my heart follow.
Praise the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, praise His holy name! Psalm 103:1
