Let all the earth fear the LORD; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. Psalm 33:8
We are in the Days of Awe, the ten high holy days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. During this time our Jewish friends engage in activities of prayer, repentance, charity and good will. They want their name to be written in “the book."
As followers of Jesus, we know our name is written in His Book. There is nothing we can do of our own work to add to that. Nothing. If I really understood that, I would find myself prostrate before Him more often.
Awe speaks of reverence, honor and even fear. Do we fear God? I think C.S. Lewis had it right when referring to Aslan the lion, a Christ figure in his Narnia series, "Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you."
When was the last time we were in awe of God? Not because of what He could do for us – but for His very being? Do we tremble at the thought of His presence with us?
Are we crushed to see our sin in contrast to His holiness? And do we marvel and weep to know He has personally paid for it all? It’s much easier for us to grasp God the provider, the loving servant, even Abba “daddy.” In some ways it makes Him “safe” - containable or predictable - if not understandable. But the Bible paints a bigger picture for us. It seems that whenever someone had a glimpse of God they were essentially undone – terrified.
Yes, God is a gentle and loving Father, but He is also King of the Universe. Reflect on who He is. So awesome He is called simply “I Am."
As you reflect on Him this season, what thoughts come to mind for you?
