For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works … Ephesians 2:10
Traveling through an ancient city our group marveled at the ruins of a temple. Encircled by majestic mountains, it must have been an incredible sight in its day. Our teacher let us go on admiring for a while before interrupting our thoughts. We were gawking at the wrong thing! Yes, the temple had been impressive – made by man for whatever futile purposes. But it was surrounded, actually dwarfed, by the grandeur, beauty and power of the surrounding peaks. God formed the mountains, the valleys, and the clouds that formed our view. He even made the stones that were used to build that now seemingly tiny little idolatrous sanctuary. In comparison to God’s creation, those ruins began looking childlike in their attempt to impress.
God created the mountains, the oceans, the vast wilderness and spacious skies. They are marvelous and wondrous to behold. But the pinnacle of His creation is you. Let that soak in. Paul says WE are His workmanship. The NLT translates that “masterpiece.“ On the sixth day of creation, God Himself proclaimed His work very good.
That is not just mankind in general. He forms each of us and knit us in our mother’s womb. He knows every hair and wrote every sequence of our DNA. And for each He made a soul – He created us, inside and out.
We are His workmanship, His masterpiece. Not a mistake or an afterthought. We are made in His image. Made for His glory. Made for a purpose. We can live with the confidence that we are designed for exactly what He has called us to do. And He has given us a good plan.
Take heart and remember - you are beautifully and carefully created by the Master. And He delights in His workmanship.
You made me; You created me. Now give me the sense to follow Your commands. May all who fear You find in me a cause for joy, for I have put my hope in Your word. Psalm 119:73-74
But now, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You are our potter; we are all the work of Your hand. Isaiah 64:8
