Saved from Sin …. And Sinning

He will save His people from their sins. Matthew 1:21

Jesus came to save us from our sin. Francis Chan asks an interesting question. Are we looking to be saved from our sins – or only from the penalty of our sins? Jesus, in His grace and mercy, saves us from both.

While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through Him! Romans 5:8-9:

The wages of sin is death[1] but Jesus paid that price. Now we don’t have to die, instead receiving eternal life in Him. There is no penalty for those who call on Him.

But if we are only seeking the absolution of our penalty, are we truly repentant? Do we also seek to be saved from the power of our sin to pull us back into unrighteousness?

True repentance is a turning around. Not only being sorry but taking action to keep it from happening again. Jesus saves us from the penalty of our sins AND by the Holy Spirit sets us free from sin’s bondage.

He himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness. 1 Peter 2:24

Jesus’ death not only paid the penalty but allows us to live for righteousness. It frees us to walk in obedience. That doesn’t mean we’re going to do it perfectly, but we turn from those things that lead us into sin. Our aim is to become like Him.

No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 1 John 3:9

The truly committed, those who are followers of Jesus, want to be saved from the sin itself - set free as to not commit it again.

Lord, save me from sinning, not only my sin.
