Life and Breath

Since the Bible is an Eastern book, truth is often conveyed through pictures and story. One recurring picture that is rattling around in my head (no comments please) is the idea of breath.

Here are just some examples of this theme:

God’s name – YHWH

The Holy Spirit – Ruach HaKodesh – wind, breath

Inspired – God breathed

In a sense, we are inspired – God breathed life into us and we are literally His inspired creation.

Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. Genesis 2:7

It is a picture filled with power but is also personal in its use – referring to the personhood of God or to His interaction with us. And I feel its impact on every area of my life when I open my eyes to it. In fact, our life is defined by the idea of a breath. When we stop, we die – the air no longer moves through our lungs and we become lifeless. When the Spirit, the Holy Wind, doesn’t move through our soul, we become spiritually lifeless.

Thank you Lord for every breath I breathe. Thank you for the wind on my face and the movement of the trees. May it remind me of the Your Presence within and the work You do in and around me.

  1. It is amazing that every breath we breathe is a other moment of life...a gift. He sees fit for us to be "here" a moment longer...
