Poor in Spirit

Blessed are the poor in spirit …

Poverty is a condition reflecting a lack or a need and those who are poor are usually acutely aware of this need. The Greek word ptochos is translated as poor in this passage. It literally means to crouch down or cower, as in begging. To be poor in spirit is to recognize my utter dependence on God’s grace and mercy. To approach Him is to do so empty-handed – like a beggar that can offer nothing in return.

The Kingdom of Heaven can be a synonym for God, since the devout Jews would never pronounce His name. But the Kingdom of Heaven is also anywhere God’s will is done, not just in eternity but also where His will reigns here and now. Sound wonderful? Jesus taught in His parables that the Kingdom of Heaven is like a valuable pearl or treasure of great worth.

The blessed know they are poor, yet live in the King’s palace. Jesus said it is the poor, the helpless before God, who hold the treasure of great price.

Trying to be humble doesn’t produce poverty of Spirit. But those who are living in that state of blessedness, experiencing the fullness of God, are humble. His Kingdom is done when we put aside ourselves and seek only Him. When we are aware of our own need and let God reign. Let’s seek God and watch His Kingdom spread. Thy Kingdom come!

… for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3

Hi Jen, William Barclay: ptōchos, which describes absolute and abject poverty. It is connected with the root ptossein, which means to crouch or to cower; and it describes the poverty which is beaten to its knees This suggests to me more than the appearance of fear and cowering in a typical beggar, but one whose poverty is so broad and deep that retaining the breath of their life is a daily question and fully dependent on the actions of others.

We discussed the poor in spirit yesterday and it made me think of the story of the Pharisee and the tax collector paying. The Pharisee was full of himself and his righteousness, while the tax collector was truly begging for some grace. Jesus said Blessed are the Poor in Spirit, and that is was the Tax Collector who was blessed.
