Knowing the Spirit – 2

Business relationships can have unique challenges due to communication and even politics. Because of my history with the corporate world, a friend with a small business has called me to walk her through some interesting client situations. She affectionately called me her business coach as I helped guide her with her associations.

We all have many types of relationships - family, friends, work colleagues. Good relationships strive for intimacy, trust, commitment, and communication but sometimes we need help to get there. An outside party is brought in to move, or coach, both broken sides toward each other. Our most important relationship is with God. There is only one broken side in that relationship – ours. And that hinders us from the closeness God desires with us.

Almighty God solves our problem, first removing the sin issue with the blood of Jesus, and then coming Himself, in the person of the Spirit, to help us, coach us, in relationship to Himself. Amazing love that He should pursue us this way.

The trinity is a wondrous mystery. One God, in three persons, manifest His love by being with us. We see a glimpse when, after His resurrection, Jesus told the disciples that He was leaving and it was better for them.

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. John 16:7

The Spirit provides distinct relational advantages, or helps, to draw us closer to Him, our God.

Intimacy

Our God know everything about us, even to the hairs on our head and He desires for us to know Him as well. The Spirit is sent to teach us about who He is.

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and will cause you to remember everything I said to you. John 14:26

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth. John 16:12

The Spirit teaches us to trust in Him as we learn His voice and learn to follow Him. Our obedience reveals our relationship to the triune God.

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God. Romans 8:14

Commitment

We are bought by Jesus’ blood and the Spirit seals our redemption. God’s promise is everlasting.

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Ephesians 4:30

Although we often stumble, we come to Him based on faith. This isn’t a blind faith, but a solid one based on truth that the Spirit has taught us.

When the Advocate comes, whom I will send you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. John 15:26

Communication

The Spirit takes our inadequate prayers and properly brings them to the Throne. It’s more than just editing the request; He becomes the requestor for us, presenting our true need based on His own position in the trinity.

The same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how we should pray, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings. Romans 8:26

If I need help with relationships with other people, how much more is my need with an Almighty God? What love God shows that He would then give Himself as a teacher, a guide to grow my relationship with Him. I’m so glad! We have an awesome God!
