Heritage

And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Galatians 3:29

Inheritance, or Nachalah, that we looked at last week can also be translated as heritage. The dictionary tells us heritage includes valued objects, qualities or cultural traditions, which have been passed down from previous generations.

We think of inheritance as stuff, but a heritage is part of who we are. As a member of the family, the Bet Av, I have both an inheritance and a heritage.

Heritage tells me something about where I’ve come from and also where I’m headed. What is my heritage?

I am attached to those who came before me in the faith. The heroes of Hebrews 11, David, Paul, Barnabas, the martyrs of the early church, Augustine, Tyndale, Wilberforce, Mother Theresa, and the millions of unnamed faithful who quietly lived in obedience and sacrifice. In my spiritual family tree is the strength of those who have stood up to evil, the compassion of those who have cared for the poor and the wisdom of those who have lead through a wilderness. The same Spirit that worked in them now works in me. And my walk matters to those who will follow.

My heritage shows that I am connected to Israel. Through Jesus I have been grafted in. The promises made through Him now apply to me. The roots of the Jewish people inform and nourish my faith. A story that began in the garden is still being told and includes you and me.

The heritage I’ve been granted also gives me a name. I am a child of the King, bride of the Son, a stone in the Temple and a member of the body. My family name calls me to live in righteousness and Christ-likeness by the power of the Spirit. I have inherited life, abundant life; and with it peace, joy and belonging evermore.

And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. Acts 20:32
